Gita Govinda

''Lord Krishna and Radha's tale epitomise the ethos of ancient India’s deeply self-aware approach to love, faith and life itself. The influence of the Gita Govinda on arts beyond dance and music of the subcontinent makes the documentation an invaluable reference material for future generations,''

- Dr. Pali Chandra

After five years of meticulous research, Kathak exponent Pali Chandra has brought to life the 12th-century Sanskrit poem ''Gita Govinda'', featuring the romance between Lord Krishna and Radha along the banks of river Yamuna.

For the first time ever, Jayadeva's revered poem transcends the written word, blossoming into a mesmerizing Kathak experience. The project meticulously weaves together all 24 Prabandhas, immersing audiences in the timeless love story of Radha and Krishna.

Gita Govinda, the 12th century love poem written by Jayadeva in Sanskrit, has always been a subject of interest for dancers, musicians, and painters. So five years ago, she and her team set up this task for themselves. In August 2023, Pali Chandra launched the recording of her choreography depicting all 12 chapters, their 24 divisions called Prabandas, and 24 Ashtapadis (songs with 8 couplets). The recordings is available to subscribers for different periods ranging from one to five years on Natyasutraonline.

While Sanskrit scholars and enthusiasts have long reveled in the beauty of the Gita Govinda, its complete essence has remained elusive to many.

Even after eight centuries since its inception, its enduring influence resonates across diverse art forms including dance, music, sculpture, painting, literature, and design. The Gita Govinda stands as a testament to unwavering love and devotion in the world.
